Kota sarees originate from the desert state of Rajasthan in India.
They are created in a cluster of small villages bordering Kota in Rajasthan.
Kota sarees are often referred to as Kota Doria which is a super transparent
stable cotton or silk cotton weave. The graphs like pattern of the Kota saree
called khats are squares between the thickness of fibers which vary according
to the design. Kota saree shopping is a
very engaging exercise through the online stores.
The sarees are light and
airy and perfect for the hot Indian summer. The kota saree is so designed that
it gets a weightlessness and airy feel. The spinning, dyeing and weaving are
undertaken by skilled artisans of the region. They are adept at weaving and
designing.
The sarees are originally woven in white and later dyed in colored
hues. These sarees often have heavily embellished zari work in the border. They
make delightful formal wear for parties, cocktails, gatherings etc.
They are a must have for the fashionable Indian woman. They are an
ethnic contribution to fashion lovers throughout the world displaying the
extraordinary skill, designing and patience of the artisans who weave them.
The Kota doria is a n exquisite work of pure silk and cotton.
Popularly known as Masuria in Kota and Kota Doria outside of Rajasthan, Kota sarees
are also manufactured in Mau in Madhya Pradesh. They are alluded to as Masuria
as they are woven in Mysore. The migrant workers came to Kaithoon near Kota and
the sarees were named Kota- Masuria.
The saree is woven on a traditional pit loom designed to produce a
checked pattern on the fabric. These square checks are referred to as Khats. In
order to make the yarn strong and durable onion juice and rice paste is used.
In a special combination of cotton and silk threads, the warp and
weft is used for creating the Kota – Doria weave. The
cotton threads provide strength and durability and the silk threads add luster
and sheen to the fabric.
Cotton for the Kota Doria comes from Madhya Pradesh and the silk
used to come from Karnataka but Korea is a
great supply base now.
For reasons of economy, the weavers take up 3 sarees of the same
design for weaving. It takes close to a week to complete 3 sarees of the same
pattern.
Kota Doria is encouraged and supported by Rajasthan handloom
Development Corporation. They have come up with an all silk kota saree. Unique
and complicated designs are created by various permutations and combinations of
silk and cotton threads.
